Finding Strength in Silence: The Practice of Stillness

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” – Psalm 46:10

In the whirlwind of our daily lives, it’s easy to get caught up in the noise and chaos. Even so, being still before God is essential for our spiritual well-being. When we take the time to quiet our minds and focus on His presence, we can experience a sense of peace that transcends understanding. It’s in these moments of stillness that we hear God’s voice more clearly, feel His guidance, and rest in His love. Making a practice of being still before God can be as simple as setting aside a few minutes each day for prayer, contemplation, or reading Scripture. It’s about creating a habit of intentional quietness, where we can reconnect with God and find strength for the challenges ahead.

Tips for Cultivating Stillness Before God

  • Set Aside Dedicated Time: Choose a specific time each day to be still. Early mornings or late evenings often work well because they’re quieter times of the day.

  • Create a Quiet Space: Find a spot where you won’t be easily distracted. This could be a corner of a room, a comfortable chair, or even a place outdoors. The Bible often talks about how Jesus sought out “lonely places” or “solitary places” to pray.

  • Start with a Short Duration: If you’re new to this practice, start with just 5-10 minutes a day and gradually increase the time as you become more comfortable.

  • Use Scripture or Devotional Reading: Begin with a short passage from the Bible or a devotional book to guide your thoughts. Reflect on the words and their meaning in your life.

  • Practice Mindful Prayer: Instead of jumping into a list of requests, start by simply being in God’s presence. Offer a prayer of gratitude or praise, and then listen for His voice.

  • Journaling: Write down your thoughts, prayers, or any insights you receive during your time of stillness. This can help you stay focused and track your spiritual growth.

  • Use Guided Prayer Apps: There are many Christian prayer apps and resources that can help guide you through the practice of being still before God and mediating on scriptures. One of my favorites is Lectio 365.

  • Be Patient with Yourself: It’s natural for your mind to wander. When it does, gently bring your focus back to being present with God. Don’t be too hard on yourself.

  • Consistency is Key: The more regularly you practice, the easier it will become. Make it a part of your daily routine, and over time, you’ll find it becomes a cherished part of your day.

In a world filled with noise and constant activity, taking the time to be still before God is more crucial than ever. It’s in these quiet moments that we find peace, clarity, and a deeper connection with our Creator. By making stillness a regular practice, we open ourselves up to hearing God’s voice, experiencing His guidance, and feeling His love more profoundly. Embracing stillness allows us to recharge spiritually, gain perspective, and build a resilient faith that can withstand life’s challenges. So, let’s prioritize these moments of quiet reflection, knowing that they enrich our spiritual journey and strengthen our relationship with God.
