Spending a week at CIY Mix with 16 middle school girls was equal parts exhausting and exhilarating. From bunk beds to bold prayers, here are nine lessons I’m taking home:
1. Three showers for thirty girls?
Not enough. Especially when everyone’s on the same schedule. Let’s just say patience—and dry shampoo—were in high demand.
2. The top bunk is for the young and fearless.
I’ve officially aged out. My knees and dignity agree.
3. Extension cords are social currency.
Bring one with multiple outlets, and suddenly you’re everyone’s favorite roommate. Power-sharing is real ministry.
4. Everything is loud.
Worship, games, mealtimes, even quiet time. Middle schoolers don’t do volume control—but they do joy, and it’s contagious.
5. Leadership sets the tone.
Our group reflected the steady, Christ-centered leadership of our youth pastor. Their respect for rules and others—even when others didn’t reciprocate—was a testament to his influence.
6. Worship was bold and unfiltered.
These kids sang, prayed, and praised without fear of judgment. Their freedom reminded me what it looks like to worship in spirit and truth.
7. Their prayers humbled me.
Raw, honest, and full of heart. They didn’t try to impress—they just talked to God. And He listened.
8. CIY Mix goes deep.
I expected fluff. I got Scripture-rich teaching, hard questions, and real transformation. Their messages didn’t shy away from truth—they leaned into it.
9. I’m falling in love with these kids—and watching them fall in love with Jesus.
Serving in youth ministry fills my cup. It’s messy, loud, and beautiful. And I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
